EOC Testing

End of the year is here!
By: Ashley Kendall

The end of the year is closing in quickly, and that means many things are in store for the students at Lake Hamilton High School. Some of those things are dreaded by students, such as the end of course exams and semester tests. Nobody likes these!

The EOC tests are used to determine how well the students have absorbed the information from class and if they need some more review, called remediation, or not. For example, if you score above basic on the biology exam you will not have any remediation. If you scored basic or below, the following year you will have to be enrolled in remediation, and finish successfully, to get the credit for that class.

Junior Cameron Anderson feels the testing can be very stressful. With the fear of failing, it’s very common to have the feeling Cameron has. Many students stress themselves out by just thinking about upcoming tests and how miserable they’ll be in remediation. Also, the late study nights can stress a student out too! While some of our classmates are well prepared and have been learning ahead of time, there are also those of us who have the last minute cram sessions.

Another junior Jessica Lingelback says end of course testing is ‘stupid’ and she doesn’t understand why they are viewed so highly in schools. This is also very common. As students, we know we are obligated to take the tests but we don’t understand why they are so important when the questions are generally so silly! Even some teachers agree that some questions are worded awkwardly or gave strange answer choices, and they do their best to teach us students how to avoid confusion.

Something else to worry about is the layout of our seating arrangement for the End of course exams. All the students enrolled in the course are stuffed in the large auditorium with a seat between each student. Sitting like this with a wooden lap board as a desk for hours can be completely mind numbing! And of course, no talking kills teenagers.

But once the dreaded testing days are over we get to move on to graduation as seniors, summer vacation, no more sitting in class or the auditorium all day long! There’s something everyone can look forward to.
