High School

High school is apart of every state, every town, it’s just pretty much everywhere around the world. Most students in high schools don’t really like to come to school but on the other hand some do. High school is supposed to be a place for learning and thinking of what you want to be when you get older.  Though not many kids really like to come to school, so why is it that not many kids like to come to school exactly?
One of the few reasons students don’t want to come to school is because of the simple fact they don’t want to wake up so early. Students don’t really prefer to wake up so early in the mornings because their not well rested for learning the next day.  Mandy Poole says that “if school started at a decent part of the day then maybe a lot of people would be able to focus more and pass subjects at the beginning of the day that they weren’t able to before.” Maybe if school started later in the morning then students wouldn’t be as tired in the mornings and unfocused in the afternoons to where they’d actually get some work done.
A couple of other reasons would be the classes and the teachers. The classes are too long and there are too many of them. Students having to deal with seven classes a day are too stressed out by the end of the day and begin to slack off. Coming from my old school to here was definitely a change and one not so good. From my own personal point of view seven classes is too much to handle and puts on more stress. Where I came from we only had four classes a day per semester which lasted an hour each day but we got out at two thirty. Grades were better and students weren’t as stressed out there. As I asked a few people around the school, they would much rather have four classes instead of having to deal with seven classes each day. Also if teachers tried to get our attentions more by doing interesting things then the students would pay more attention instead of sleeping and doodling on papers and even day dreaming half the time.
If teachers were more calm and less stressed about having us learn things then we would be more focused, and if they tried to talk like a normal person and broke it down into something easier and more interesting then we would pay attention more other than having to take notes on some complicated work we have no idea what were writing and are just expected to learn it and ace a test. Just because teachers find this stuff interesting and easy, not all students do or get it. Most students have to be sat down with and have it broken down into easier simpler ways. Some students wont raise their hands in class to say “I don’t get it” because of the simple fact that they don’t want to feel stupid or down graded since everyone else gets it.
Another reason most students have problems in classes is because they don’t see why they have to learn it if there never going to use it in the future and the stressing over so many other classes they have to pass. Studies show that the human brain likes a good challenge and makes us curious to learn new interesting things, however if the brain finds a problem too difficult then it automatically tries to give up and if the problem is too boring and dull then it gets bored and just stops working. According to Dr. Willingham, a doctor who studies the brain and why kids don’t like school, that the main reason kids don’t like school is to think abstractly, that the brain is not designed to be good at that or enjoy it. He also says that when confronting a task it should be only difficult to hold an interest and not to difficult that we just give up automatically. (The answer sheet.com) Therefore, if school wasn’t as dull, boring, and as long as it is, and maybe a little more interesting then we would pay more attention in classes.
