New Kid at School

Imagine being the new kid at a new, school, in a new state, and it is
Senior year plus, you don't know anyone. Could you do it? Picture
moving to a significantly smalller school where everyone knows
everything about each other. You might have too leave all of the people
you grew up with behind. You would have to leave your best friends and maybe
even your boyfriend or girlfriend. It wouldn't be easy.
For me, when I moved to Lake Hamilton, it was scary and intense. It
was scary because I was starting over in a new school, where I didn't
know anyone. It was intense because I didn't want to be here in this state or in this school. I didn't
want to be taken away from my friends.
Every year, there is at least one new student that moves into a school. Many of these kids feel alone, and they have no one that talks to them. Few people actually go up to them and introduce themselves to make that student feel comfortable. Usually, students introduce themselves
and they don't talk to the new kid anymore after first meeting them. It would be a
lot easier if everyone was much more welcoming.
My experience at Lake Hamilton High School has been difficult. Many
kids already have a clique that they fit into, and they don't want to
stray from that  clique and make friends with new kids. On the first
day of school, maybe about ten people talked to me. I would walk into
class and people would look at me as though I was foreign. Today, as I am
writing this, it is my fourth day of school and I have a few friends
that I talk to everyday. I can say that I have friends at Lake
Hamilton. At my old school, I had a lot of friends that I talked to
and that I wasn't afraid to be myself around. They all love me for who
I am.
This isn't the first time for me to be a new kid. When I first moved
to Red Oak, it wasn't easy. It wasn't as hard as it is moving to Lake
Hamilton because I was in Red Oak for so long, and I was younger when
I first started school there. It is easier making friends when you are
younger because there is no judging. When you get older and begin high
school it gets more difficult because people start becoming who they
really are.
Honestly, all you can do is be yourself and do your best and hope
that you make good friends. No one is going to be your best friend on
your first day of school. If you give it time, things will work out
and get better. You just have to be open to new things, It is
important to make new kids feel welcome so that they enjoy their
experience at the new school they are joining. Just put yourself in their
shoes, you wouldn't want people to ignore you.

2010 Football Season

2010 football season

The lake Hamilton wolves football team had a successful season finishing 9-4 and reaching the semi-finals. The wolves were  beat by the Eldorado wildcats 21-20 in the semi’s who went on to the winning the state championship the following week. Although not having the size as in years past the wolves proved many sports writers and commentators wrong by having more than just a sub par season. Lake Hamilton’s tight end Cameron Anderson said, “no one really thought we would make it deep in the playoffs and we did. I feel like we had a great season and have nothing to hang our heads about.” When asked about next year Anderson gave a cute grin and said, “no doubt we will be back next year in the semi’s. except next time we’re gunna win and win the next time in the championship.”
The wolves have a rich tradition in football and the past 50 games are 38-12. there were some big games in this 50 game span. Such as when Texarkana was ranked number 1 in the state of Arkansas followed by number 2 ranked in state, lake Hamilton. Lake Hamilton. Lake Hamilton won the game and jumped to number one in state. Also, lake Hamilton has played two states champion games in 1992 and 2008.also, two of the last 50 games have ben televised on state wide tv. The wolves have a 1-1 record winning at Pine Buff in 2009 season lake Hamilton was recognized nationally for Game of the Week. The lake Hamilton vs. Pulaski Academy game was voted the number 1 game of the week in America. Lake Hamilton won the game 32-30.
With the football season being over the wolves are already hard at work. From lifting weights to throwing the ball, the wolves are focused and ready for next year. With the entire group of talented receivers coming back and a powerful line the lake Hamilton wolves are on track for another successful season.

An Old Fashion Christmas

Hot Springs never seems to disappoint during the Christmas season. Everyone around seems pumped and ready to be out of school and work for their long holiday break. Each year down town, a Christmas Parade is held around the beginning of December filling the streets with joy.
The Christmas parade had various decorated floats, some with Christmas trees, and snow machines spilling fake snow out onto the crowd. Others played Christmas tunes like, “Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree” and “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas”. Some people sang popular Christmas songs on their floats themselves. The parade featured the Lake Hamilton High School, Hot Springs High School, and Lakeside High school bands playing tunes all the people danced to and enjoyed. Many of the band students decorated their instruments with wrapping paper, Christmas lights, and also wore Santa hats. One float carried a band, made up of a singer keyboard player, and guitarist playing Christmas music. It was covered in snow and Christmas trees lit up the entire float. A ship covered in white Christmas lights filled with people drifted down the street at the parade. Garland County Library boogied down the street with book carts, while Dream Chaser belly dancers whirled past the crowd. Also included in Hot Springs Christmas Parade were Dance City USA, West Shores Retirement Community, Hot Springs Rotary Club, and Mrs. Arkansas. Each float had creativity and was very original.
The entire Christmas Parade was fantastic and was organized extremely well. Parade Organizers announced the awards for Hot Springs Christmas Parade on Tuesday December 7th at Arlington Hotel and Spa. National Park Community College won best all around float for the parade, while Dr. Harold Koppel and Dr. Adam Hall placed 2nd. Dentist Eskew and the Christmas Train won most creative award, with children riding in the Christmas decorated train seats. Dream Chaser Belly Dancers received best Choreography Award. The Ray Lynn Theatre won best special effects, and also, the Byron Cole Rhodes Family Foundation Award. Destinations Day Spa and Hot Springs Laser Institute received best use of theme award.
Hot Springs 2010 Christmas Parade was longer, and even better than the year before. Each float had people cheering and ready for the Holiday Season. People were dancing, laughing, and celebrating while all the children were excited to see Santa Clause at the end of the parade calling out “Merry Christmas!”  The Christmas Parade was a major success and everyone’s Christmas Spirit up.

Quit Dreaming, Start Living

Do you remember being a child and riding an imaginary mythical creature across the pastures of your living room?  The carpet transformed into a grassy sea of luscious beauty unknown, and your walls became trees with framed faces that spoke to you in a secret language.  And you, you were the ruler over all of your made up empire riding across the lands of your owning on the most majestic beast known to man.  Well, being a student at Lake Hamilton, you can turn your dreams into something more, now that you are older, and start living your chosen reality.
Growing up in the Lake Hamilton School District, we have been allowed to express ourselves and have been given many opportunities to expand our horizons and establish a concrete foundation for a stable future.  Lake Hamilton has given us the tools, such as leadership, organization, and responsibility, which we need in order to be efficient in the world as independent citizens of society.  It has given us the knowledge we need to be a productive generation.
To begin, Lake Hamilton is the number one rated school district in the state of Arkansas based on scholastic criteria.  Lake Hamilton has reached many goals in the task to better the education standards for students.  First, the school opened up more doors for students to be able to take Advanced Placement courses.  An Advanced Placement course is a class that allows students to challenge themselves and receive college credit if applicable.  Taking an AP course also gives students the contingency to apply such tools as leadership, organization, and responsibility to the well-being of their success in life.
AP students must be leaders and take the initiative to be punctual and in command (therefore they have beating sticks).  But, they must also be willing to listen, as a good leader is required (so big ears are apart of the criteria).  Advanced Placement students are organized and have their plans in order.  They generally know exactly what they want and strive to keep order when completing their (field) goals.  And last, these students are responsible and do not solely rely on their teachers to pull the slack when they do not understand something.  They perform research and go through a lot of trial and error before they get a project even remotely correct and then there is the task of revising.  The teachers basically say we suck until we reach perfection.  AP classes are rigorous and take precious time and attention to complete.  It takes patience and drive to pass and someone who is willing to figure things out on their own (a diabolic super genius or Scott Fredericks).  After taking an Advanced Placement course, students are required to take an AP Exam which determines whether or not a student is allowed.  Lake Hamilton has had no problem meeting the standards set by the College Board.  The College Board to AP students means death.  Ok, maybe not death but demise similar to extinction.
Being a senior at Lake Hamilton, I reflect on the opportunities that I have had and the risks I have taken.  I have taken two AP classes, AP English Language and AP English Literature, and both of them have broadened my ability as a writer.  In each class, my mind has been stimulated and challenged to think outside the box, although I would rather be buried in a box full of packing peanuts.  I have been encouraged to analyze the hidden meanings and universal themes of riveting and twisted works of literature.  Aside from AP classes, I have also had the chance to express myself through the Future Farmers of America and LH Singers.  I have expanded on my leadership skills and identified my talents through hard work in the FFA and long hours singing in our school’s choir.  Through singing with our school’s choir, I have discovered an outlet to relax and let my emotions blossom into a beautiful sound rather than cause a scene.  I am currently the LH FFA president and am working towards a better tomorrow.  We are collecting non-perishable food items to benefit the hungry members of our society, and anyone can donate!  Besides these great clubs, Lake Hamilton has assisted in helping me find who I am as a person and allowed me to make my dreams turn into a potential reality.  I have dreamed, grown, and learned, and now it is my time to shine and begin living a life all my own.
So, I encourage you to evaluate your tool box and consider your options.  If you obtain a leader’s perspective, organization, and the responsibility of a mature teenager, then you have the best chance to begin living in the real world after high school rather than being forced into the real world, lost in a dream.

Assassins in School

By; Claire Booth

Ms. Nye’s sophomore English classes were filled with assassins. A while ago, they were reading a Shakespearian play titled, ‘Julius Caesar’, which inspired a game that they played. In this story, Caesar was murdered by one of his friends, which is probably how some students ‘died’ in the game.

This game helped display betrayal between friends, like Caesar and Brutus. Caesar was killed by the hand of Brutus, along with the other conspirators, to get what he wanted. It shows how people, even back in the day, backstabbed one another, but in a fun way. You learn how to be shady in this game. What I mean by that is, act friendly to everyone but don’t trust anybody, not even your closest friend. The winner of this game got to pass on the test that the class took at the end of the story. Who doesn’t want that? The way that you would win this game is to get the highest ‘body count’ or ‘kills’ and be the last one alive at the end.

Of course, with any game, you must have rules. One of the big rules is; you must wear the button you received on the first day of play, and you must make it visible to other players. If you forget it, you don’t play for that day. But forget it again, and you’re out. The other big rule is that you must have your ‘target’ card. It contains the person’s name that you are supposed to kill, and without it, you cannot play for that day. If you receive someone that you don’t know; hope that they have a Facebook, because you cannot switch with someone else. Ms. Nye will know if you do, she has a chart that has everyone’s name on it, along with who they are supposed to kill. The only official play time is during school; between classes and at lunch. After school athletics, band, and extracurricular don’t count. There are only two safe zones as well; the classroom, that you are scheduled to go to, and the restrooms.

How do you know if there is cheating going on? Well, that’s the purpose of The Senate. This is a group of some students, and the leader, Ms. Nye. Anything that they say is cheating will not be argued with, and the cheater will be taken out of the game. Only Ms. Nye has the power to bring people back, but only if their ‘death’ was due to a student’s cheating.

Monday, November 15 is when this game officially ended. There was a tie between DJ Johnson, who never died, and Taylor Werst with ten ‘kills’. Because it was a tie, neither of them had to take the test. The second place spot was taken by Matt Lawrence, with four ‘kills,’ and his prize was ten extra bonus points on his test. If you have any younger siblings and they have pleasure of getting Ms. Nye as an English teacher, tell them about this amazing game. I know they’ll enjoy it.

Bambi Hunting?

What is hunting to you? Is it a sport, a pleasure, or just something you do for fun? Many people in the State of Arkansas take hunting as a hobby and sometimes a competition. There are many hunting competitions in Hot Springs Arkansas. Not everyone likes hunting because they don’t like killing animals, or as my grandmother would put it “murdering innocent creatures of the Lord.”
In Arkansas there’s different types of hunting, for instance, there is deer hunting which starts Nov 13 – Dec 15, dove hunting which starts Sep 4 - Oct 19 and Dec 11 – Jan 5 , duck hunting season dates are from Nov 20 - 28, Dec 7 - Jan 17 and Jan 22 - 30,etc…Hunting is said to be fun and a great way to make unforgettable memories. Hunting is one of the State’s favorite “hobbies” almost everybody goes hunting. Many people even take off work and school just to go out of town and hunt. They are gone for hours, days and in some cases even weeks. Hunting season starts on November of every year and it ends around March.
Most of us at one time or another have flipped through the pages of our favorite hunting magazines or browsed the pages of our favorite hunting websites and commented to ourselves on how “lucky” some of the feature hunters were to have harvested such tremendous animals. And for some of those hunters luck was indeed on their side. For others, though, luck had nothing to do with it. Hunting is all about having fun and staying safe.
All in all, hunting in the state of Arkansas is a hobby and a competition; though many of us enjoy hunting it doesn’t exactly mean everyone else likes it. Some people think hunting is a way of destroying our state “The Natural State.” Many even argue that if this state is natural then why kill the wild life in it? But of course hunters and those who enjoy it aren’t trying to hear that. Hunting is a very fun and enjoyable sport in Arkansas.

Merry Christmas! I Got You…
A Breakup

Its Christmas time and you know what that means: Christmas Movies! One of my favorite holiday past times is cuddling up next to a warm fire with a mug of hot cocoa and watching the premiere of the newest holiday movie on the Hallmark Channel. The movies are always so happy and a great way to get in the mood for the season: beautiful displays of decorations, the fluffy white snow that just so happens to fall on Christmas Eve night, and the fairytale romances that hold the plot together. As soon as the credits start rolling, however, so do my tears. In all the holiday movies, I can’t help but notice how they all end with the couples getting their happy ending.
As the saying goes, “You never know what you have until it’s gone.” Around the holiday season especially, this saying seems to hold true for quite a few people. In the past few weeks, more and more of the people I know seem to be coming out of relationships, dealing with the confusion of a not-so-in-the-past ex, or trying their hardest to make their relationship last through one more night. We, as humans, are naturally going to take things for granted in our lives and one day wish that we’d done things a little differently. However, being as we are humans and have fully functional rational minds, we have the chance to really take this holiday season to heart and start learning a lesson or two from these classic holiday movies.
Ever since the very first Christmas, the holiday season was meant to be a time to give thanks, make peace, and to cherish loved ones. Over the years though, it seems as if more and more people are drifting away from that and onto the practical aspects of the holidays. Each day, our society is becoming more materialistic and it really starts to affect our personal relationships whether it be a breakup, realizing they’re no longer the one, or not showing them that you care, especially around Christmastime. But that, my friend, is what holiday movies are for: getting us in the spirit and sparking our minds with wonderful ideas for not only decorating and values, but for relationships too.
Ironically enough, actually the holidays seem to be the time where a lot of couples start their not so happy endings. Granted, people grow apart, couples fight, and relationships end all the time but there seems to be something about the holiday season that makes breaking up with your girlfriend two days after Thanksgiving seem like the perfect early Christmas gift. The holiday season is supposed to be a time where we are remembering and cherishing the things that we are grateful for in our lives, not looking at your relationship issues aand ending things completely.
Whether it’s a romantic carriage ride in the moonlight, a dozen white roses, or just simply a love letter, the couples on these jolly holiday flicks are constantly showing each other how much they care. Well, wakeup and smell the freshly brewed, peppermint flavored coffee people, and take a hint or two of what these little gestures do for their relationships! Even the smallest thing to show you care can make the difference between the drifting apart and the happily ever after of your relationship. If more people took the time to show their significant other that they really do care, we’d possibly have a lot less of the “It’s been a long time coming…”s and more “I love you "s which should come in to practice a lot around this time of year.
An equally heartbreaking event that doesn’t so much fit with the holiday spirit is a good old holiday breakup. I mean really, who doesn’t just love a text explaining how things just “aren’t working out” while you’re in the midst of all the holiday shopping and preparation? I don’t know what it is about the sparkling lights and pretty green trees, but it seems to be (maybe in a jerk’s delusional mind) the perfect setting for a breakup. If you think about all the classic holiday movie favorites, you can bet your heart that none of those happy endings are a result of a “It’s not you, it’s me” line. Although these movies are not completely realistic one hundred percent of the time, if all of the possible “dumpers” out there sat down and watched one or two and got into the holiday spirit, maybe they’d think twice before ending it all and ( at the very least!) wait until after the holidays.
So whether you’re in a nasty argument with your boyfriend, thinking about how to let her down easily, or pathetically waiting for your ex to realize his mistake, maybe you’d benefit by flipping over to Hallmark and cozying up with a romantic Christmas movie. Watch closely how the couples of these winter wonderland love stories deal with every aspect of their relationships. Take some tips, get in the holiday spirit, and don’t be the one who’s translation of the words “Merry Christmas” are “It’s over.”

Your Holiday on a Budget

It’s almost that time of year again and if you’re like most people out there, you’re probably stressing out because you probably don’t have enough money to spend on gifts. Well worry no more my under paid friend, there are cheaper ways to plan your holidays, like organizing your budget, comparing item prices, or even just using coupons.

The first thing you need to do is to plan ahead, and track how much you might be able to spend on gifts and decide how much you have to spend. Remember, only list enough you can afford, do not go over the amount you can spend. If you do you may go over budget without realizing it.  You can do this easily by using Microsoft excel. All you need to do is list the persons name in A1, List the things that person wants in B1, and in C1 type out this formula, =price1+price2… and so on. An example for one person would be A1-Billy B1-Legos, Transformer C1 =$10.00+$20.00 (when you hit enter C1 should turn from =$10.00+$20.00 to $30.00.). Now add a person in A2, A3, and so on. After your done adding everyone on your list, go to the row under the last person and enter [Total], [left blank], and the formula [=(C1)+(C2)] and so forth in column A, B, and C respectively, but leave out the brackets. If you did this right, C should become the total money you may spend. After you are done with this you can put the amount you have to spend in D1 and in the row named Total you can put the formula =spending-(Cn) were spending is the amount you have to spend and n is the row number. If the number appears in parenthesis that means you went over the amount you have to spend buy that much. Who knows, maybe you’ll have money left over.

Now that you’re done with your list, let’s think about deals. One thing most people don’t know about prices is that different stores may sell the same thing for different prices. For example, a can of cashews cost $1.00 at Walmart, but at Dollar General the same can of nuts cost $3.00. Now I’m not saying that Dollar General over-prices all their stock, something at Walmart could be cheaper at Dollar General, I’m just saying be careful were you buy your gifts. Also, be careful of infomercials, the fushigi ball costs $27.00 if you order by phone or website, but I found one at K-mart for $5.00. Another tip is to save and collect coupons; you can get them from a magazine or even print them of online. If you have to you can even by generic products (transmorphers, build-a-bricks, etc.) for less. Remember to only spend money on what you need to get. By now you should have either spent all your money or finished buying the gifts.

Now that you’ve done everything you can do, check your list twice and see if you were able to get everyone their gifts. If you have anyone left over, don’t worry, you can make a gift for free. Just use common household items, or even give someone that x-box360 you don’t want now that you have the Kinect. And above all have a happy holiday!

The True Meaning of Christmas by: Madie Blancaflor

“Merry Christmas!”   This time of year you hear those words 24/7, but what do they really mean? Christmas is the most commercial holiday in America, possibly the world, yet only a few really understand the true reason to having this mystical holiday. Now days, all anyone cares about is saving money from all the sales, getting the most expensive gifts, and having the prettiest tree in your living room. What happened to spending time with loved ones, making homemade gifts, and visiting the Nativity Scene at your church?
Over the years, Christmas has been transformed from a traditional, religious holiday about family and celebrating the greatest gift of all (Jesus Christ) into a modern, money making scam. Sure there are the families who treat Christmas as they should, but there are also the companies that make a ton off of money off of over priced toys that loving parents want to buy for their kids or loved ones.  I mean if an old guy who needs to shave and lose a few pounds can make a living off of sitting on his butt asking fifty kids what they want their parents to get them for Christmas, you know something is wrong with our society. Candace Bohem, a sophomore here at Lake Hamilton, complains that too many people focus on themselves or the money they are spending. “This time of year, all you hear are little kids telling stories about sneaking in their parents’ room at midnight to see what presents their mom got them or parents arguing about how they are going to pay for those presents. It’s ridiculous. Christmas should be about family time and celebrating Jesus’ birthday. That’s why we have Christmas.”
Candace is completely right. The majority of the people who celebrate Christmas across America don’t even know the history behind the holiday. Christmas has been celebrated from the beginning of Christianity as the birthday of Jesus Christ. As for the presents, there are different theories on why we give gifts: there is the historic fact of the three wise men giving Jesus gifts when he was born, and then there is the metaphor that Jesus was the greatest gift God gave to the world, so we get gifts on his birthday. Now, whether or not you are a Christian, that is why Christmas was invented and that’s why it should be celebrated.
Ashley Kendall, another sophomore, says “Christmas is the time for family and friends. It should be when you come together as a family or community and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. How many presents you get or how much money your work gets from the Christmas rush doesn’t really matter. Christmas is the time for miracles and magic!” (and she didn’t mean the Wicca board, people!!!) Cameron Anderson believes that Christmas shouldn’t be celebrated for the wrong reasons. “It makes me so mad when people say the only reason they celebrate Christmas is for the presents. I mean if you are going to celebrate the holiday, at least have the courtesy to celebrate it for the right reasons.”
So whether you get Call of Duty: Black Ops or that new cell phone you’ve been wanting for Christmas this year, don’t forget the reason for the season. Family and friends are important too. Join together for the holidays, tell them you love them, and don’t forget to thank God for the greatest gift He could have ever given: Jesus Christ, because THAT is the true meaning of Christmas.

Where's the Respect? By: Ashley House

Since the first day this year in LHHS, I have noticed that several students don’t show much respect for others and even worse, they disrespect the teachers. Where is the respect, and if it’s here then why is it not being shown anywhere? Out of everyone in this whole high school there may be a quarter if even that many of people in the entire building that actually respect anybody besides themselves.

How can anyone disrespect their teachers so badly? In all of my classes, I know of several people that do things they know they shouldn’t do, and just for the spite of it. Then, when the teachers confront them about it, they talk back and act as if they don’t know what they did.  Students in the classroom have to be told several times to stop talking in class and they still go on talking, and throw things across the classroom, then they get mad at the teacher for getting onto them over it when they clearly deserve it.

I know they can respect the teachers and staff of the school, but choose not to. If everyone did respect the teachers, then people here wouldn’t get into as much trouble, but from what I have been seeing, I think that those students like being in trouble. If everyone around LHHS would start respecting one another as well as the teachers, then everything would be so much better.

Some people think it makes them cool to talk back to their teachers, but it’s not cool at all. It just shows how insecure and rude they are. If people can’t respect a teacher at school, especially in high school, then how can they possibly have self respect? There are some students who act right but everybody else is so immature, and they know better than this. Where is the maturity in this place? Everyone is acting like a bunch of five year olds, but the sad thing is that I’ve seen little kindergarteners act more mature than these high school students. Grow up already. We’re in high school, and should be the ones setting a good example for those little kids instead of them for us. That’s pretty bad when the little five year olds can show their manners and respect for the school staff, but people in high school can’t. LHHS students need to learn to respect people.

When students misbehave in their classes, it puts a lot more stress on the teachers than they should ever have to deal with. Most people really don’t care if they’re making everything harder for others. While learning everything else, everybody should learn to respect the teachers, because they’re spending all of their time teaching and helping us all, so we could possibly do something good with our lives. They could be doing something much better than this but we’re lucky they chose this. Also, I’m sure the principals get tired of seeing the same students for the same problems everyday.  Disrespecting teachers is not going to cause anything but trouble.

Arkansas's Mysteries By Cameron Anderson

                                       Arkansas’s Mysteries

When most people think about the state of Arkansas they think of farming, Tyson Chicken, and the Razorbacks.  They usually think of Arkansas as a plain and simple state.  Little do they know the many mysteries the state holds.

Arkansas has many mysterious places, stories, and sightings.  The Arlington Hotel in downtown Hot Springs is known for many ghostly experiences.  Legendary gangster Al Capone stayed at the Arlington on many occasions.  He would rent out the entire 4th floor.  It is rumored that the exact room Capone stayed in is permanently locked up.  But no one knows why.  Guests at the Arlington have reported seeing people in old fashioned clothes walking down the hall, or strolling through the lobby, and simply disappearing.  Some believe that they have seen Capone.  At the bar wine bottles would continually jump off the bar as if someone was pushing them off.  With all of the ghost talk about the Arlington brings ghost enthusiasts to stay in the hotel.  Trying to see what all of the talk is about.

In south Arkansas near Texarkana is the “Fouke Monster” also known as bigfoot, is a legendary cryptic in Fouke, Arkansas.  During the early 1970’s the “Fouke Monster” was accused of attacking a local family and killing livestock.  The story got so much attention that in 1973, a semi-factual, documentary, horror feature The Legend of Boggy Creek was made.  Although much of the talk of the “Fouke Monster” has died down there was a remake of the first film which is entitled Boggy Creek and was released last summer.  The History Chanel’s show Monster Quest did an investigation on the “Fouke Monster.”  No one knows for sure if the creature is real but many believe it is lurking around the town of Fouke.  But with the publicity it has gotten the small town of Fouke, Arkansas is now known nationally.

The White River in the town of Newport, Arkansas the White River Monster terrorizes the waters.  It was first reported in 1915 when local farmers began seeing a large unknown creature on the banks on the river.  It is believed to be twelve feet long and four or five feet wide.  The sightings died down for many years until July of 1971.  It was spotted “thrashing” in the water.  There were even tracks examined by cryptozoologist Roy P. Mackal.  After studying the evidence Mackal believes that the “monster” was a large male elephant seal had somehow worked its way into the river.
But still people insist what they saw was not a seal.  Seal or “monster” it is a very strange mystery to the state of Arkansas.

There are many mysteries in Arkansas.  These are just to name a few. Next time while walking downtown Hot Springs near the Arlington, or passing through Fouke, or even crossing the bridge over the White River remember to keep your eyes open.  You never know what you might see.

Dealing with Peer Pressure
By: Amber George
You are a new student at Lake Hamilton High School, a sophomore. You’re not so popular, but you are desperate to make friends. You are willing to do anything to make them. One day, one of the popular kids come up to you and asks you to go with them to Sonic instead of attending class. She says the only way you can be their friend is if you go. What do you do? Do you go with them and risk getting in trouble, or do you go to class?
Making decisions on your own is hard enough, but when other people get involved and try to pressure you, it makes life difficult and could get you in trouble. People who are your age, like your classmates, are called peers. When they try to influence how you act, to get you to do something, it's called peer pressure. It can make High School difficult and very stressful.
Peers influence your life, even if you don't realize it, just by spending time with you. You learn from them, and they learn from you. It's only human to listen and learn from other people in your age group.
It may not seem like it, but at Lake Hamilton High, there are a lot of problems with peer pressure. Students are being influenced all around. If you look at all the different cliques, you can see that everyone in that clique acts some what like everyone else. This is caused by peer pressure. Without even realizing it you can be affected by peer pressure. It causes you to act different, and only others may realize this. The way students are influenced may not always be bad.
There are two types of peer pressure; positive and negative. Peers can have a positive influence on each other. Maybe another student in your geology class taught you a nifty way to study for your upcoming test. You might admire a friend who is always a good student and try to be more like him/her. Maybe you got other students excited about your new favorite book, and now everyone's reading it. Those are examples of how peers positively influence each other every day.
Sometimes peers influence each other in negative ways. For example, a student in your class may ask you to let them cheat off of your test or try to get you to cheat off them because you look like you’re struggling. I know it’s hard to say no, but in a negative situation it’s best to go with your gut.
I’ve given into peer pressure before, and it has gotten me in so much trouble. For example, one time I was in Wal-Mart with some friends and they were all getting away with taking things. They told me they wouldn’t ever ask me to do anything that would get me in trouble, and I believed them. Well as soon as I stuck a stick of orange eyeliner in my pocket something grabbed my arm. I turned my head and there was a man about six feet tall grasping on to me. He made me put it back and thankfully let me off with a warning. Now I frown upon the people who take things or ask me to take things. I try to avoid negative peer pressure as much as possible. I understand it’s hard and I know that sometimes people can make it seem fun to do things you shouldn’t but in the long run saying no is the best way to go.
Students give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked, to fit in, or because they worry that other students might make fun of them if they don't go along with the group. Others go along because they are curious to try something new that others are doing. The idea that "everyone is doing it" can influence some kids to leave their better judgment, or their common sense, behind.
It's great to have friends with values similar to yours who will back you up when you don't want to do something. It can really help to have at least one other peer, or friend, who is willing to say no. Just think if all your friends where jumping off a cliff to sudden death would you? If so then good luck but if not congratulations you made the better choice.

Debates About Countries In Auditorium

On November 29th, the World History and World Geography’s classes at Lake Hamilton High School got together in the auditorium to debate the situations of countries all over the world. Starting with countries most involved in the world situation actually: United States and North Korea. The debate was conducted by Mr. Webb, who exposed the topics to students who defended their countries and showed to all group their countries’ version of the subject discussed. Mr. Shane Aitken’s students and Mr. Bernard Rusert’s students were responsible to expose between them many aspects of theirs countries’ situation as economic, political, religious, pirates, AIDS, drugs, immigration and nuclear weapons. The purpose was that each student represented a country, trying to defended it and expose this countries’ point of view about actual problems in all over the world.
The first debates’ discussions started with what happened between the North and South Koreas and the possible involvement of the United States. Subjects like the economical crises in Europe, drugs in Mexico, the emergent countries’ possible economical position in the future was also discussed.
Of the issues placed on the table, the one which took more than 70% of time and involved all present countries was the topic of nuclear weapons and the countries’ right to keep them or not. The class determined one more action of U.S. imperialism. They concluded that America tries to impose power over other countries’ right of having nuclear weapons. And actually U.S. own government and army would never give up on having nuclear weapons.
The debates had three days, starting on November 29th, and ending December 1st.  Through debating, it was possible for students and teachers to interact with each other about world problems, informing all people involved and enabling them to be informed and make their own opinions about all things discussed.

Study habits

Are you having trouble studying? Is it because you don’t have enough time or get easily distracted? Some people study too much at a time which is why kids these days have a hard time studying because of stress there isn’t enough time, or they get easily distracted. Here are some tips about what you can do to study better and do well in school.

One thing you should do is make time at home to study. Don’t focus too much on one particular subject; try to space it out and take short breaks in between subjects. Taking these breaks will restore mental energy, leaving more room for you brain to absorb more information. Study time is anything you do related to school work; it could be reading, completing work from class, or working on a paper or project.

Another technique is to study at the same time every day to create a pattern. This will help with having a regular activity, just like sleeping and eating. When you have a study time scheduled, you are actually mentally preparing to study for whatever time you are studying for. Your brain will be ready and so will you to absorb the information you need, and will help you later on.

Reviewing notes is also good; it’ll make you remember stuff you might’ve forgot like maybe how to solve a particular problem, or the correct way to write paragraphs for English class. Notes even help by making sure you are doing an assignment correctly. They may help you complete and assignment faster, even the most difficult ones, which require a lot more effort. If you decide to use your notes, make sure you use them on the harder assignments so you understand them better. This is useful to do because you’ll have the most mental energy doing the harder assignment first.

The last thing to do is, turn off your cell phone, it distracts you from your work. It’s true, if a friend were to call you while you’re doing your work, you can lose track of what you were previously doing and forget it. If they start talking about things that you know will keep you distracted. Stop them and tell them to wait till you’re done with your work, and you’ll call them back when your done, unless they have the same question or problem you are doing, then ask them for their input on it, which in a manner of speaking means, ‘two heads are better than one.’

These tips and suggestions matter because students are having a lot more trouble studying due to iPods’ and cell phones. What students should do is, make more time for school work and create patterns for study time and take little breaks. Review is another thing, along with turning off cell phones or music so you have a calm quiet environment to study in.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. :)

By: Amanda Poole

“Welcome to a whole new year at Hogwarts!” This movie is known as the most anticipated film of the year.  People in Lake Hamilton have been looking forward to this movie since the very first Harry Potter movie came out in 2001. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, coming in two different parts, first release is November 18, 2010 at Midnight, and the second part comes out July of 2011. Could it possibly be the best seller of the year?
Lisa Schwarzbaum at Entertainment Weekly gives the movie an A+ and wrote: "Part 1 is the most cinematically rewarding chapter yet… Haunting every frame of this assured and beautiful first half is the knowledge that soon, in 2011, the screen journey will be over." It’s certainly going to be a sad day when Harry Potter finally comes to an end. But everyone’s on the edge of their seats to see how the final part turns out.
Harry Potter started out as a simple children’s book coming out to the Library, and seemed to make a huge impact on society. It was so popular that of course it had to be made into a movie series too. The movies became so popular because it was one of the first fictional movies that came out that was about witchcraft and wizardry that was actually fun to watch. Before the only kind of movies we saw was boring, and didn’t seem even half as real as the Harry Potter movies. The cast was young, and the story-line was a little hard to follow. But over the years more and more people started to become interested in the way things would all turn out. And it slowly became one of the most hit series of movies to watch. Because everything about it kept people interested on how things would turn out. It’s been a long journey for the cast and the story, from the very beginning to the very end.
According to IMDb news, before the movie even came out Warner Bros. made 25 million dollars in selling tickets alone, which is a new record. And the movie takes up 96% of daily ticket sales the week before it came out. And the first weekend made $205 million in 54 overseas countries, bringing the film's worldwide total to $330.1 million! This completely blows any other Harry Potter movies out of the way, with the last record of 102.7 million with The Goblet of Fire.
We’ve literally watched all the characters grow up throughout the school years for almost a whole decade. Many kids have been following it from the beginning. And now even a new generation is also getting into the epic series. Harry Potter has grown up to be one of the best wizards out there, and with Hermione and Ron following up in his tracks. The whole series shows these little kids from the beginning age of only 11, to the old age of 20.
In other students perspectives they believe that Harry Potter has grown to be a pretty awesome series over the years. They believe that the books might have been a little tough to read first starting off, but got easier once they actually saw the movies. They think that the movies actors have gotten better over the years and honestly have almost reached a peak. Some kids say that ‘Dumbledore” the head of all wizardry could have stayed the same throughout all the movies and it would have made a better impact on them. If they were to rate the Harry Potter series from 0-5, 0 being the lowest, on average students rated it as being a high 4. Most of the students around Lake Hamilton have enjoyed the whole epic series of Harry Potter growing up, and some of them have even followed from the very beginning.
In my own perspective, this is by FAR the best Harry Potter yet. It’s full of intense scenes and a major cliff hanger. It left me on the edge of my seat the whole time; I can honestly say I’ve never had a movie do that to me before. In one of the few scenes of the movie, Harry, Ron and Hermione are traveling from place to place to protect Harry from getting killed. Harry roams off in the middle of the night and happens to come across the pond from “The Prisoner Of Azkaban” ,in that pond he finds the key to killing an evil Horcrux that seems to be turning all of them evil the longer they’re around it. He decides to dive into the pond, and when he dives into the freezing cold pond he realizes that the Horcrux is holding him back from getting the object. He fights to get out of the water but it’s frozen from above and he can’t seem to break the ice. How will harry be saved? You’ll just have to go see for yourself!
Harry Potter has sure been one of the most nerd-filled, powerful, and suspenseful film and book series out there. The fact that it’s coming to an end sends chills through all the Harry Potter fanatics out there.   But Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows sure will be one of the biggest blockbuster movies of all time. We’ll not say goodbye just yet. Just say see you soon! Like they say in the movies... “Repeat after me; without wands please; Riddikulus!"

Christmas in Hot Springs

Hot Springs, Arkansas is home to the famous Bath House Row. Hot Springs gets its name from the extremely hot springs, 143 degrees, which run underneath the area. They have been set up to flow into the bath houses where, once upon a time, many people came to bathe in the mineral filled hot waters. Also, in this area, there are many stores for visitors to browse through, hotels, the Arlington Park, and great restaurants. Though, Hot Springs is an amazing place to begin with, it becomes a whole different scene when it comes to Christmastime with the festivities and lights illuminating the magical feel of the holidays.
Hot Springs hosts one of the largest displays of lights in Arkansas, Lights on the Landscape; fifteen acres of Garvan Woodland Gardens will be scattered with over 1.7 million lights to see. Admission prices consist of $4.00 for children six to twelve, $6.00 for adults, and free for children five and younger. This festival ran from November 20, 2010 and is ending on December 31, 2010.
Speaking of lights, you could also go to Iron Mountain Christmas 2010. The dates for the event began on November 26th and is still going on to December 31st, so if you missed the beginning don’t worry there is still time left to go, it begins at 5:00 p.m. and end at 11:00 p.m. So, what exactly is the Iron Mountain Christmas 2010? Well, it’s a light display, over two million lights, that transforms Iron Mountain on Lake Degray into a nautical winter wonderland! They are asking each car to donate $5 that will go to the Make a Wish Foundation.
Also, the annual Christmas parade was held on December 6, 2010 in Downtown Hot Springs, it began at 6:30 p.m. The theme for this year’s float entries was “Christmas in the Park,” which means that each float has to be decorated based on Christmas in the park. The parade route began at the Central and Whittington Avenues intersection. The parade also served as a canned food drive. All of the canned food was donated to the Project Hope Food Bank to help stock local food pantries. There was a collection of barrels set up along the parade route for the viewers to donate.
Now if you’re looking for something in the way of music, Hot Springs Vienna Theatre began presenting it’s Special Christmas Show November 27–December 31. Show times are every Thursday through Saturday beginning at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday afternoon matinees beginning at 2:30 p.m. The show is featuring Ken Goodman, a soloist, singing some of your favorite holiday tunes. Another holiday show was performed, Home for the Holidays, a Red and Green Musical Revenue, at the Low Key Arts Building on December 3 at 9:30 p.m. This is a family friendly event that features various musical performances by local talented groups. Bring the kids for cookie decorating and hands-on crafts from 8–10 p.m. A five dollar donation is appreciated.
The Arlington Hotel hosted the Arlington Gingerbread House celebration, Tree Lighting, and caroling in its lobby on December 3rd from 4:30–5:30 p.m. So, if you didn’t make it this year, you’ll about it for next year in case you want to go check it out. They also had caroling and festive holiday decorations and you could also make a guess on how many pieces of candy there was on the gingerbread house they hade in the lobby. Everyone was welcome to this event and refreshments were served. The Arlington Hotel is even hosting a Christmas Day Feast for those people who do not feel like cooking. It is a special holiday meal in the Venetian Dining Room where you can enjoy an elaborate buffet featuring specialty items and traditional favorites. Adults get in for $32, children 6-12 for $25, and children under five are free.
For the kids, Mid-America Science Museum hosted a breakfast from 9-11 a.m. December 11th. The kids had a festive morning filled with breakfast, singing, craft projects, exploring the Museum, and a visit from, none other than, Santa and Mrs. Clause! Though, this event wasn’t free, five dollars isn’t a bad price for a fun-filled experience for the young-ins.
Who knew there were this many festivities going on in Hot Springs during the holiday season! These are only a few of the events that Hot Springs, Arkansas use to showcase their Christmas spirit. If you would like to know more about festivities a Hot Springs visitor, or even a Hot Springs resident, could participate in during the holidays, visit the website http://www.hotsprings.org/.

West Side Story

Did you know that your fellow students and classmates are able to sing, dance, and perform an amazing Broadway production? Those who saw the performance of West Side Story do!
West Side Story is a Broadway play, with a script by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein. West Side Story is set in New York City during the mid-1950s; the musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. Mr. Parker, the director of drama at the High School, directed West Side Story, along with the help of his students, brought together a spectacular play full of fantastic singers and suspenseful actors. Each audience was left feeling amazed at what talent the students and peers beheld, and talking about which scene or song was their favorite. The dark theme, extended dance scenes, and sophisticated music marked an important point in Broadway productions, and the focus on social problems changed things for American musical theatre. Popular songs are featured throughout the play such as "Jet Song", which the entire Jets gang sings towards the beginning of West Side Story. "Maria", another popular song in West Side Story, is sung by Tony, played by Tim Cooper, after the dance between the Jets and the Sharks. Tony reminisces and sings about meeting Maria for the very first time. During the song "Maria", the crowd perceived exactly how in love he was with each note that was sung and many claimed they were "on the edge of their seats" waiting to hear all of the other students sing. Bernstein's score for the musical has become extremely popular.
I sat down with Mr. Parker, and asked him some questions about the play. Parker played Glad Hand, the chaperone at the dance between the Jets and the Sharks, and also as Doc, owner of the Drug Store. Parker and the students rehearsed Monday-Thursday from 4-8. Rehearsal lasted this way for about 10-11 weeks and held out till 9pm closer to show time. When asked how well all of the students and he worked together to make the play happen, Parker replied, "Everybody got along real well. My thespian president, Connor Goad, and Maggie Rubben choreographed the play.” West Side Story had many dance scenes, and acrobatics performed by the students throughout the play keeping the audience closely watching. “Our backstage manager was Michael Holeman, Cody Harris running sound, Bree Rose opening curtains,” who all did a fantastic job keeping the play going, “and Chance Minton on construction," who made most of the props and the set for West Side Story. Throughout the play the members of the Sharks from Puerto Rico are mocked by the Jets. Riff, played by Tyler Bradshaw, is the leader of the Jets, a white working-class group who intend on keeping their "turf". Tony one of the Jets, and the young protagonist, falls in love with Maria, played by Erin Kandlbinder, the sister of Bernardo. Connor Goad played as Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. Everyone that was working on the play and helping out really brought it all together, especially for opening night.
Opening night was "Scary," Parker says "I knew we were ready, and I knew the students would do perfect, but you can't help but get a little bit nervous." Parker also says the "best performance and the most realistic was the Saturday night performance." A portion of the play was performed for the Junior High November 11th and for the High School on the 12th. When asked how each audience the play was performed for differed, Parker replied. "Junior High was really good and responsive. Once the High School got into the show, they were really good, and I wish we could've done the whole thing for them. Afterwards we got so many compliments from teachers, and from students." Mr. Parker and his students brought the emotion and dark theatrics of West Side Story right off the stage and into the audience. I asked Parker how he wanted people to feel while watching the play, "I just wanted them to be impressed with the level of difficulty that we were able to pull off." Parkers' favorite part of the play was seeing everybody come together. "The students were the ones who made it happen and that's really my favorite part."
Connor Goad who played Bernardo, also helped choreograph the play, which he said, "part of it we copied just from the movie, but mostly we were just creative and it was fun." The extended dance scenes seemed hard to incorporate, but the students had a fun time working together to learn the choreography. When asked how it was working with everyone to rehearse for West Side Story, Goad said, "Sometimes difficult, but everyone was really focused and ready for the job, so it was productive." West Side Story’s' opening night wasn't just exciting for the audience but also the cast. Goad says opening night was, "Exhilarating. It was so much fun, everyone was really excited." I asked what Goads' favorite part of the play was, he replied, "I like the sense of family that was built from the cast, the story itself, and the music of course."
West Side Story was presented in the Lake Hamilton High School auditorium on November 11th and 13th and 7 p.m. and a matinee performance was at 2 p.m. the 14th. West Side Story showed many students what their peers were capable of doing, and many students claimed they were very impressed by their talents. Parents, teachers, and peers left the play proud of how well the students worked to reach what they had been working so timelessly on. Through all the preparations, late practices, and students working together, West Side Story turned out wonderful and fun for both cast and crowd.

Party or Not to Party??
By Amber George

It’s your first year at Lake Hamilton High School, and you’re the little guy, the sophomore, you may think it’s going to be easy now that you have moved up. You think you’re going to get a break because you’re almost out. Well high school is nothing near easy if you don’t put forth the effort, but if you do put forth the effort then high school is a breeze.
Many students come from the junior high thinking that high school is going to be nothing but dances, parties, and club activities. Not everyone is prepared for the actual work. If you don’t goof off your sophomore year it makes your senior year easier on you. I’ve learned from personal experience that if you fail more then one class your sophomore year it makes senior year a lot more stressful and provides work for you. High School isn’t as hard as most make it seem, because all you have to do is listen and do your work.
If you do the work, it’s easy to get the 22 recommended credits by the time you graduate. More then half of your grade comes from homework, so if you get that done, you will more than likely pass. When asked what she expected high school to be like when she was a freshman, current sophomore, Ashley Hill replied with, “I thought high school was going to be super hard, but actually, it’s easy if you do the work”.
High School is hard, but in many ways, it’s easy. If you pay attention in class and use your time wisely, then you can get most, if not all, work done in class and still have time for your social life. If you don’t get something ask a teacher for help, its there job to teach you. If you don’t like asking questions in class stay after class or attend the tutoring program on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:05pm to 4:10pm, where there will be teachers for each subject there to help you with anything you don’t understand.
There are many reasons that high school isn’t as hard as most students make it. You just have to work hard and pay attention. Put forth the effort because in the end I promise all your hard work will pay off. (Remember if you can dream it, you can achieve it.-Walt Disney)

High School

High school is apart of every state, every town, it’s just pretty much everywhere around the world. Most students in high schools don’t really like to come to school but on the other hand some do. High school is supposed to be a place for learning and thinking of what you want to be when you get older.  Though not many kids really like to come to school, so why is it that not many kids like to come to school exactly?
One of the few reasons students don’t want to come to school is because of the simple fact they don’t want to wake up so early. Students don’t really prefer to wake up so early in the mornings because their not well rested for learning the next day.  Mandy Poole says that “if school started at a decent part of the day then maybe a lot of people would be able to focus more and pass subjects at the beginning of the day that they weren’t able to before.” Maybe if school started later in the morning then students wouldn’t be as tired in the mornings and unfocused in the afternoons to where they’d actually get some work done.
A couple of other reasons would be the classes and the teachers. The classes are too long and there are too many of them. Students having to deal with seven classes a day are too stressed out by the end of the day and begin to slack off. Coming from my old school to here was definitely a change and one not so good. From my own personal point of view seven classes is too much to handle and puts on more stress. Where I came from we only had four classes a day per semester which lasted an hour each day but we got out at two thirty. Grades were better and students weren’t as stressed out there. As I asked a few people around the school, they would much rather have four classes instead of having to deal with seven classes each day. Also if teachers tried to get our attentions more by doing interesting things then the students would pay more attention instead of sleeping and doodling on papers and even day dreaming half the time.
If teachers were more calm and less stressed about having us learn things then we would be more focused, and if they tried to talk like a normal person and broke it down into something easier and more interesting then we would pay attention more other than having to take notes on some complicated work we have no idea what were writing and are just expected to learn it and ace a test. Just because teachers find this stuff interesting and easy, not all students do or get it. Most students have to be sat down with and have it broken down into easier simpler ways. Some students wont raise their hands in class to say “I don’t get it” because of the simple fact that they don’t want to feel stupid or down graded since everyone else gets it.
Another reason most students have problems in classes is because they don’t see why they have to learn it if there never going to use it in the future and the stressing over so many other classes they have to pass. Studies show that the human brain likes a good challenge and makes us curious to learn new interesting things, however if the brain finds a problem too difficult then it automatically tries to give up and if the problem is too boring and dull then it gets bored and just stops working. According to Dr. Willingham, a doctor who studies the brain and why kids don’t like school, that the main reason kids don’t like school is to think abstractly, that the brain is not designed to be good at that or enjoy it. He also says that when confronting a task it should be only difficult to hold an interest and not to difficult that we just give up automatically. (The answer sheet.com) Therefore, if school wasn’t as dull, boring, and as long as it is, and maybe a little more interesting then we would pay more attention in classes.
