What do you think of when I say the word study hall? Does the word freedom come to mind? If so then study hall is just the class for you, NOT!!! This year at Lake Hamilton High School the administrators are setting up rules and academic guidelines for study purposes, thus the name Study hall, but instead of being a class where you could once pull out your cell phone without any problem, or listen to your IPod, it has turned into a class that should be described as “The Teenage Penitentiary”. Course description: freezing desks, assigned seats, total silence, and no source of entertainment technology.
Just when you thought you signed up for a class where you could be relieved of the normal classroom environment you get stuck with what you were trying to avoid, more work! As to why the administration is transforming this so called “course” into an actual class I’ll never understand. You don’t even get credit for it! Therefore it shouldn’t even be called a class, it is a FREE period.
Study hall in high school terms means either one of two things, nap time, or recess. It is a time where students catch up on their social hour other than lunch, where really the lines are so long that all you really have time for is to eat and be on your way. Anyways, back to what I was saying, study hall is a time for students to relax, catch up on last night’s sleep, or a time to have fun and goof off. As for the teacher his, or her job is to serve as a replacement and temporary babysitter. I mean who needs a babysitter, we sure don’t. We are high school students, or for some Seniors! Either way study hall is not the class it was once known to be, Fun.
